Every year on a Friday in May, children from Marion Cross School left early and walked one mile to Huntley Meadow to fly their kites. The sky became alive with color and strings.
Milt Frye began the tradition inspired by a kite day at his own elementary school. At first the students made their own kites, but soon it proved more successful to fly store-bought kites.
The tricky part of kite day was being able to take advantage of a windy day. Milt recalled that more often than not, the wind didn’t quite cooperate.
The culmination of Kite Day was popsicles for all!
Today Marion Cross students welcome spring with a May Day festival.
